Beastie Boys: Intergalactic
CONCEPT: How a distinct cultural identity could be interpreted through physical products, by translating spirit and attitude into tangible experiences.
Across two music videos, Sabotage and Intergalactic, I approached the Beastie Boys with narrative illustration and unique packaging in mind. Each project was developed to honor the original material while offering fans something new and special.
Intergalactic 2-Pack — Packaging as Experience
The packaging for this Intergalactic 2-Pack was made to function as a diorama inspired by the energetic music video. The outer sleeve depicted the Giant Robot’s head and, when removed, revealed the diorama and the two figures fighting inside.
Intergalactic Cardbacks — Construction Workers Series
A companion release to the original Intergalactic 2-Pack, this series expanded the world of the music video through three individual cardbacks. I took on the illustration work myself, developing the character poses from initial sketch rounds through to final art.
CONCLUSION: Together, Sabotage and Intergalactic demonstrate how I approach culturally significant IP: by listening closely to its voice and translating that identity into products that feel authored and alive. Whether through narrative illustration or unique packaging, the goal was to preserve the essence of the Beastie Boys while offering new ways for fans to experience it.
Another Dimension
The window box for the figures was designed to emulate a miniature cityscape. Special attention was also paid to the placement of the figures, with a unique blister created to have the figures fighting within the diorama box.
Style, profile
The packaging for the Intergalactic 2-Pack featured PMS and spot gloss callouts, with an additional red foil for the sleeve to bring the Giant Robot’s eyes to life.
I'm a rapophile
Inspired by the Hello Nasty World Tour, these cardbacks featured stylized illustrations and bold colors. The front featured unique art for each rapper, while the back recreated the art seen on the original poster for the In The Round World Tour.
‘Cause the music is live, like an electric shock
Stitched together to create an energetic animation, these exploratory sketches were based on the dynamic dance moves seen in the music video. Original sketches featured directional arrows, which were later dropped in the final versions.
Intergalactic Planetary
When placed together side by side, the cardbacks create a fun and colorful composition.
