Lightyear
CONCEPT: How packaging could extend the world of Lightyear beyond the screen, not just through graphics, but through experience, anticipation, and interaction.
Across two distinct products, the goal was to work within established style-guide assets while creating packaging that felt playful, memorable, and rooted in Pixar’s Lightyear universe.
Sox Supersize — Packaging as Prop
For the Supersize Sox vinyl figure, the packaging was designed to function as a physical prop from the film. Using official movie assets, I developed a custom dieline that emulated Sox’s in-world pet carrier, complete with die-cut ventilation holes, an integrated carry handle, and a screen-printed viewing window.
Rather than treating the box as disposable, the structure and graphics were designed to reinforce character and story, allowing the packaging itself to become part of the product experience.
Early Enlistment — Preorder as Experience
The ReAction figure release was approached as a time-based experience inspired by the Kenner Early Bird mail-away program of the 1970s. The concept reframed the preorder as a unique introduction with a nostalgic and vintage collector nod.
Fans who pre-ordered the ReAction figures received a custom-designed “Early Enlistment” envelope ahead of the figures, containing a certificate of authenticity, sticker sheet, embroidered patch, recruit card, and a display backdrop. These materials established narrative and emotional investment before the figures arrived.
The final release completed the experience: a set of four figures housed in a special box, accompanied by a four-pack of custom display stands, turning the full arc from preorder to delivery into a cohesive, collectible experience.
CONCLUSION: This project represents how I approach licensed IP: respecting the source material while finding opportunities to build memorable experiences through beautiful visuals and unique interaction. By using packaging to shape anticipation and participation, these works aimed to make the product feel special and part of a larger universe.
