Process: Cortex Commander 1/6
Process of custom 1/6 scale action figure made from hand-sculpted parts kitbashed with additional figure parts and clothing.
This figure is a follow up to X-2, which was created as a pitch for Super7 to start a 1/6 scale line using their original IP, The Worst, for inspiration. The ReAction figure for Cortex Commander is used as the base for this project.
The project began with sculpting and painting a base for the head assembly. To create the brain floating in a dome, I taught myself how to create molds and pour resin. First I sculpted the brain, made a mold for it, and created resin copies to test how I could float it in clear resin. I painted and weathered the brains before attempting this.
After making a mold for the dome, I began testing clear resin. My first attempt at pouring clear resin ended up with the brain settling to the bottom of the mold. For my second attempt, I poured some resin first, let it settle a bit, before placing the brain and finishing the pour. This led to a successful, “floating” brain. To finish off the head assembly a base was made to surround the dome and it was painted to match the weathered look of the figure.
To finish the project, weathering was applied to the flamethrower and small details like text were added to the backpack and helmet.
Finished product turnarounds can be seen at the end. As well as an in-office photo of both figures, side by side with their 1/18 scale counterparts.
